Yvonne Irwin, 52 years old, has been working as a recreation assistant for a local retirement community for the last 15 years. The residents love her. There she is know for her compassionate, kind, and , nurturing nature.
She is the mother of 3 adult children and grandmother to 8 amazing kiddos ranging from 1 year old to 19 years old. Yvonne is a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan who loves nothing more than watching games and sitting outside on her patio, listening to birds, and tending to her flowers while listening to country music.
Recently, she was admitted to the hospital for severe pneumonia. During the diagnosis and treatment of the pneumonia, they discovered that she had a lung mass. After additional testing, including a lung biopsy, MRI of the brain, PET scan, doctors diagnosed her with stage 3 adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer.
Due to her current physical limitations and the upcoming radiation and chemo treatments, her expected time off of work will exceed 3 months. Her employer does not offer extended sick time as a benefit, and Yvonne , due to her recent illness, has utilized all of her remaining regular sick days.
Yvonne will have little or no income coming in to pay for rent, utilities, car, phone, etc. Additonally, we anticipate significant out of pocket medical expenses. Because she will not be working, or working very little, Yvonne will also be paying her health insurance out of pocket.
We are currently trying to navigate Missouri and cancer-specific financial assistance resources and programs to help with the financial burdens she will be experiencing during treatment.
