My wife, Maryann, was hospitalized a little after Christmas. She went to the doctor because she was in terrible pain in her lower abdomen and had a high fever and nausea. They took her temperature and found it was 103, and moved her to the E.R. This began her little over two week stay in the hospital. There was an infection on her lower abdomen that was found to come from a stain of MRSAS, which had turned septic. The hospital had her on iv fluids and antibiotics for several days, before an ultrasound revealed a large abscess which would require surgery to remove, otherwise she couldn’t recover. The surgery seemed to go well, as a grapefruit sized mass was removed, though she remained on the antibiotics. They had her hooked up to something called a wound vac to help the cavity left behind drain. Unfortunately, the machine became clogged with pus and it became clear that they hadn’t managed to clear out the entire infection. They needed to perform another surgery to completely clean the area out. This one was wholly successful, and two days later she was able to return home. Two weeks passed with daily visits to the hospital for iv antibiotics and wound care. Now we are left facing the price for Maryann’s survival. The bill we are left to tackle is $8,151.56, this is after the insurance, and we only have four months to pay. We are an elderly couple on a fixed income and with limited savings, any help would make a world of difference.
