Hi, my name is Jeff.
I have been recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Unfortunately, AML is associated with an extremely poor prognosis and is currently known to be the most fatal type of Leukemia. Doctors have recently discovered that I also have a rare chromosomal translocation causing my Leukemia to mutate. This mutation causes my already extremely, aggressive disease, to progress even more rapidly, making my prognosis even poorer. I am a 43 year old, newly hired mail carrier. I have a wife and 2 sons. Our oldest son is 14 and will be attending a private high school in the fall. Our youngest is 5 years old and he too will be attending a private school in the fall. Our family resides in a community that is considered to have a failing school district, making private school the only acceptable option for our children’s education. We are offered scholarships, but unfortunately, there is still a substantial amount my wife and I are required to pay. I am currently unable to work and because I have just become a full time employee, I am ineligible for FMLA or any other type of compensation. My wife, who struggles with epilepsy, is a Registered Respiratory Therapist and works full time at a Level-One Trauma Center. In order to care for my sons and I, she was forced to take a leave of absence in February, when I became ill. She has since exhausted all of her paid time off and we have nearly depleted our savings, making this devastating time even harder for our family. We have applied for financial assistance from the government and have been waiting several weeks to confirm or deny eligibility. We have very few family members, none of whom have the financial resources to help. My family and I are desperate and consider this one of our last resorts.
