Hi, our names are Kaila and Shannon and we are fundraising for our mom, Donna Scirghio. In November of 2023, it was confirmed that our mom’s cancer was back (again). Liposarcoma is a very rare form of cancer affecting 1 in 100,000 cancer cases in the U.S. each year. She fought and beat this nasty disease in 2020 and in 2022, undergoing rigorous IV treatments, drastic diet and lifestyle changes, and two complex surgeries. The latest surgery lasted over 9 hours, and between the two surgeries she has had 10 different organs and muscles partly or entirely removed.
We are heartbroken to find out that she will now be battling for a third time. The tumor is once again in her midsection and unfortunately already pretty large (15cm+). This is causing her to experience pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and weakness on a daily basis.
We’ve created this fundraiser to help our parents cover the costs of the treatment our mom would like to move forward with. The primary treatment is called Insulin Potentiated Therapy (IPT), which has shown to have promising results for her type of cancer and low side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy. Her treatment plan also consists of various IV therapies to strengthen her immune system which is vital for the IPT effectiveness. Unfortunately, the first month alone will cost almost $30,000 as it is not covered under insurance. This includes her going 3-4 hours a day, five days a week. From there they evaluate her rate of response, which would then determine her ongoing frequency of treatment.
Our parents aren’t ones to ask for help in this way, but they are still paying for the first two treatments and surgeries she went through. Our family would be so appreciative of any help you’d be able to provide, whether that be in the form of dollars, prayers, well-wishes, love, sharing this, anything you can think of.
