Jake, Kiana, and their newborn baby Richard.

Baby Richard was born at 35 weeks gestation, on Tuesday May 28th at 3:55 p.m. at the birthplace in Essentias new hospital. He was a tiny 4 pounds 7 ounces and 17 inches long. His birth was exciting and scary and sad at the same time.  Jake works full time and Kiana is in between jobs, at Kianas normal OB appointment on Friday May 24th her blood pressure was high, her blood work and urine sample looked ok, so dr. let her go home with implicit instructions to go back if she had any other symptoms.

Jake took Kiana to the ER on Monday and was admitted to the birthplace at St. Mary’s in Duluth. They could not get her blood pressure to come down so they decided to start to induce her at 35 weeks! Jacob stayed right by her side and endured the first night of come and go contractions. Kiana was so tired, got barely any sleep plus was on Magnesium which gives effects on it’s own. Anyhow, the new Birthplace at Essentia in Duluth is amazing, as is the NICU right there as well!
In the early hours, Jake woke with a severe headache, layed back down on the little couch next to Kiana; fast forward he wakes up in the morning tells Kiana he has a headache in the front part of his head-unusual for him. He then lays back down and has a Seizure! Kianas in the bed, can’t get up, so she uses her call button-and then starts yelling! OMG! How scary! Jake has a seizure and they take him down to the Emergency Room to be evaluated, MRI, the whole nine yards! He ends up having an additional seizure while he’s in the Emergency room; thankfully his Mom was there with him! They admit him; and if you know seizures, it messes with the head, brain and may take a while to feel back to normal.  Meanwhile……..Kiana is in active labor and they are inducing her with Pitocin every hour trying to induce her labor, 35 weeks is early but…doable and they were in a hospital with a neo natal unit (However her fiancé and Daddy; They are first time parents who went thru a heck of a lot of complications with miscarriages to get here;….is in a hospital bed himself trying to recover from the seizures he had! On and off all Monday, Tuesday early afternoon they break her water—which is only trickling out. She’s in active labor and hoping to give birth soon! She gives birth Tuesday afternoon with me her mom, and her older sister. Jake was unable to be there for his baby’s birth as he was stuck in a hospital bed too!

Jake works a full time job and Kiana is in between jobs and wasn’t planning on having baby until the end of June! They have rent, and all the other bills that a household endures due. Kiana and Jake have been discharged from the hospital, however; the baby; Rick is still in the NICU getting some help. Kiana has been by babies side and is breast feeding. Jake has also been discharged, and he had to go right back to work, as he does not have any more vacation (He had to use his when he was in the hospital) He is back by Kianas and babies side when he’s not working. Baby is in the NICU Unit, he’s a peanut weighing 4 lbs 7 oz, (luckily the wonderful Dr.s were able to unwind the cord from his neck!) Thank God! Lil stinker, no wonder it was so hard to get him out.

As Kianas Mom and someone who cares a great deal about this lil family as it’s my baby’s baby’s family; would really like to help them out, medical bills are going to be ginormous, (Jakes insurance has a very high deductable) and this has all happened very unexpectedly
, I’d like to reach out to our friends and family to help pay their rent and possibly some other bills-they just moved into an apartment in Superior. Please help if you can, every little bit helps, even if it’s just a share of our story and a prayer! Thank you!
