  1. Hello everyone,

We are reaching out to our community and friends to ask for your support in helping Emily on her journey to recovery.

In July, Emily was rushed to the Emergency Room and was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia & Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria.

These two diseases are extremely rare, and doctors along the Wasatch Front are doing their best to treat her. Emily is averaging 4-5 transfusions per week. Since August, she has had over 50 transfusions. Her medical team has confirmed that she is transfusion-dependent, meaning she is unable to survive on her own without blood products.

  • Her medical team have determined that the course of treatment is a lifesaving Bone Marrow Transplant, with the process beginning mid-November. Her youngest sister is currently a candidate for a full match. Prior to this procedure, Emily will require high-dose rounds of both chemotherapy and radiation as a treatment prior to receiving the transplant. After the transplant, she will remain in the hospital for 1-3 months for continued treatments and monitoring.

About Emily:

Emily is a vibrant, talented, and strong individual who has faced unexpected health challenges and has responded with a positive attitude. During her 4-8 hour long blood transfusions, Emily knits hats to donate to others receiving cancer treatments. We believe that with the power of community, we can make a significant impact on her path to healing and happiness. She is determined to come out stronger on the other side of this treatment journey

Emily has been a teacher for 12 years. She is currently employed as a sixth grade teacher at Midas Creek Elementary in Jordan School District, and awaits the day when she is able to return to teaching. Emily married her husband, Jeremy, in June 2020. Jeremy works with children with Autism. They both have devoted their careers to helping children. Emily has always been the pillar of strength for her family and friends, but a few months ago, she received this life-threatening diagnosis. This news was unexpected to Emily and those who love her, due to unexplained chromosome deletion and gene mutation.

Why We Need Your Help:

Medical treatments, surgeries, and chemotherapy are costly, even with insurance. Emily has applied for multiple grants to cover expenses, but because she does not have a cancer diagnosis, she is not eligible, even though the treatment is the same.

The burden of these expenses are overwhelming for Emily and her husband. In addition to mounting medical bills, the loss of income due to her inability to work during treatment has put them in a precarious financial situation. In addition, when Emily returns home, she will require 24 hour care as she recuperates. Her husband will need to cut back his work hours to do so. We are kindly asking for your support to help relieve the financial stress on Emily so that she can focus on her recovery.

How Your Donations Will Help:

The following estimates came from consultations with charitable organizations and a local CPA. As stated above we were denied financial assistance by charitable organizations, such as Livestrong, because Emily does not have cancer.

Your generous donations will go toward covering the following expenses:

Medical Bills ($16,500): Funds will help pay for surgery, chemotherapy, and other  essential for Emily’s lifesaving recovery. The benchmark of ongoing care is 5 years. We are hoping to raise for 3 years of out of pocket max ($5,500 per year).

Household Expenses ($26,500): With Emily unable to work, her family is struggling to cover everyday bills, such as rent, utilities, and groceries,  costs and caregiver costs upon release post-treatment.

Preliminary Costs ($20,000): Fertility preservation and dental work. Chemotherapy will cause infertility and all dental work needs. These are out of pocket costs.

Transportation Costs ($3,500): Emily will be in the hospital up to 3 months and will be receiving ongoing care up to 5 years after her release.  Her hospital can be as much a 2 hour round trip due to high levels of traffic.

Your Impact:

By contributing to this campaign, you are not just helping Emily financially, but you are also giving her hope and strength to fight her battle against these rare and challenging diseases. Your support will ease the emotional and financial stress that she and her family are experiencing, allowing them to focus on what matters most – Emily’s recovery and her wellbeing.

We understand that not everyone may be in a position to donate, but sharing this campaign on your social media, with friends, and within your community can make a significant impact. Let’s show Emily the power of a caring community.

Thank you for joining us in this fight!
