My grandma was recently diagnosed with advanced small cell lung cancer. After meeting with her doctors, we received the heartbreaking news that there are no more treatment options, and she has been sent home on hospice with only weeks to months left to live. This has been devastating for our family, and we’re trying to make every moment we have left with her as meaningful as possible.
Unfortunately, she did not have life insurance or funeral arrangements in place, and the financial burden has become overwhelming. More than anything, I want her to be able to spend her remaining time in peace without worrying about what will happen after she’s gone. I’ve promised her that I will find a way to honor her wishes, but the reality is that I cannot do it alone.
My grandma has spent her entire life putting others before herself. Whenever someone needed help, she was the first person to show up with love, support, and anything she could give. We may not have a large family or a big support system, but she has always been our strength and the person we could count on no matter what.
She has made it clear that she does not want to be cremated. After speaking with the funeral home, the least expensive burial option is around $13,000, which is far beyond what I can afford. Her one final wish is to spend time in a cabin in the Tennessee mountains with her family, surrounded by the people she loves.
