Seventeen years ago, Robert Greene took a bold step of faith to plant Redemption Hill Church in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. From day one, he was committed to building a gospel-centered, grace-driven, and mission-minded church. Over the years, Robert has poured his heart into this mission, sharing the joy of the gospel in more than 500 sermons and taking the message of Jesus to some of the darkest places in the world.
His teaching has laid a spiritual foundation for so many of us. He’s shown us what it means to walk in godliness, humility, gentleness, and unwavering faithfulness to the gospel of grace. Through leadership, God grew Redemption Hill into a thriving spiritual family where Jesus was treasured and lives were transformed.
Sadly, this summer, Robert was abruptly removed from his role as lead pastor. In late May, the elder board sent him a list of criticisms. Robert, caught off guard, responded thoughtfully. He rephrased their concerns into relational questions and asked numerous questions for clarity, hoping to bridge the gap in understanding. Without answering these questions, the board voted to disqualify him as an elder and terminated his employment through email. He was given a few days to gather his belongings and provided 10 weeks of severance. This was later extended to 17 weeks.
Many pastors and counselors have expressed significant concerns about how the Greenes have been treated. Tyler Jones, U.S. Vice President of the A29 Network, wrote to the Redemption Hill elders twice, noting that the standard severance for a founding pastor is typically one month’s pay for every year served. Other highly-respected pastors have also urged the board to reconsider the severance, but the board has stood by its decision.
Together we can step in with love for the Greenes by providing the severance they need. Robert’s role at Redemption Hill was the family’s sole financial support. When they planted the church, Robert and Erin made a joint commitment—Erin chose not to work outside the home so she could fully support their family and the growing needs of the church. While we trust that God will guide them through this season, the sudden loss of income and damage to their reputation have made it difficult for them to find new opportunities.
By easing their immediate financial burden, we can give the Greene family the space to heal and seek God’s direction for the future. Let’s surround them with love and support, showing them that their years of sacrifice and service are deeply appreciated. Your donation, which is tax-deductible, will be a tremendous encouragement to the entire Greene family. We ask that donations remain anonymous to protect the hearts and relationships of all involved.
