My name is Nichelle, and on June/07/2026 my whole life took a turn upside down when my grandmother took her final breath after a long, painful fight with stage 4 cancer. She passed away at my home here in Fort Myers, surrounded by love. Even though we knew her body was getting weaker, nothing prepares you for the moment when someone who shaped your whole life is suddenly gone.
My grandmother was so much more than her illness.
She was the heart of our family — the one who always had a story to tell, a joke to lighten the mood, or a piece of advice that somehow always turned out to be right. She was strong in ways most people never saw. Even on her hardest days, she tried to smile. Even when she was in pain, she worried more about us than herself. She loved deeply, and she loved loudly.
She didn’t have much, but she gave everything she could.
She taught me how to be patient, how to be kind, and how to keep going even when life feels impossible. I was her primary caregiver through her entire battle — the appointments, the medications, the sleepless nights, the fear, the hope, and the heartbreak. I would do it all again if it meant she didn’t have to face any of it alone.
But now that she’s gone, I’m facing something I wasn’t prepared for.
My grandmother did not have life insurance, and the cost of burial or cremation is more than I can handle on my own. At the moment, there are still expenses that fall on me — expenses I simply cannot afford while grieving and trying to take care of everything she left behind.
I’m asking for help so I can give her a peaceful, dignified farewell.
Nothing extravagant. Nothing beyond our means. Just something that honors the woman she was — strong, loving, stubborn in the best way, and full of life even when life was unkind to her.
