Hello,
My name is Antoine Merritt. I am a 42-year-old African American man who is asking for help during the most difficult season of my life.
At the beginning of this year, I was living a healthy and productive life. I was 6’1″, weighed 200 pounds, and worked as an over-the-road box truck driver, supporting myself and planning for my future.
Everything changed after I ate seafood while working near Dallas, Texas.
Within weeks, I became extremely sick. I experienced constant nausea, weakness, dehydration, and could barely eat or drink. I sought medical help multiple times, but I was repeatedly told that I was simply dehydrated and sent home.
As the weeks turned into months, my condition became worse. I lost over 60 pounds and went from a healthy 200 pounds to only 138 pounds. I was hospitalized multiple times before doctors finally performed a colonoscopy and discovered that I had parasites that had been making me severely ill.
After receiving treatment in the hospital, I finally began to improve. However, another obstacle appeared. The medication I needed after discharge was denied by my insurance company. I spent months fighting for approval while trying to recover, unemployed and unable to work.
Today, I weigh approximately 135 pounds. I am still rebuilding my strength, waiting for disability assistance, and trying to recover financially from months without income.
