Dewan is the Assistant Fire Chief for the Jacksonville Fire Department in Arkansas. About 3 years ago, he was diagnosed with liver cancer. He tried chemotherapy and targeted therapy. However, he eventually required a liver resection surgery. It was painful, took a long time to fully recover, and expensive medications followed. Hospital bills piled up, placing his family into tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Then he was cancer-free for a time, until last year, when he had to undergo surgery for a second time with another liver resection. He barely survived, even having a heart attack on the operating table. He fought back with a lengthy rehab, medications, and love and support from his family. This year, his cancer has metastasized to his lung and kidney. Dewan has started another round of expensive treatments, including chemotherapy. He currently has over $28,000 in medical debt. He is expected to be charged another $9,500 in medical treatments in the next 6 months alone.
Dewan has served his community for 28 years in the fire service. He has fought dangerous fires, performed extraordinary rescues, and treated more than 1,000 medical patients during his time. Dewan chose a career where he repeatedly put his own life up for collateral for that of a stranger. Now, I hope strangers have the heart to help him through this.
