For the past four years, my biggest goal has been to create stability for my child and myself.

In 2022, my marriage ended under very difficult circumstances, and our lives changed almost overnight. I had to completely rebuild while also making sure my child continued to have a safe, stable home. There was no financial cushion and no second income to fall back on. When something broke, an unexpected bill came in, or my child needed something, I was the person responsible for figuring out how to make it work.

During those years, I accumulated nearly $15,000 in debt. It wasn’t from vacations or expensive purchases. It was the result of trying to keep a household running and a child cared for while adjusting to doing everything on my own.

Since then, I have worked extremely hard to change my financial situation. I work full-time, budget carefully, pay my bills, and have steadily worked to reduce the debt I accumulated while starting over. It has taken years, but I finally feel like I am reaching a point where we have stability again. I am incredibly proud of that because I know how much work it took to get here.

Unfortunately, I am now facing a major expense that I simply cannot absorb without taking on significant debt again. The heating system in our home needs to be replaced, and I have received an estimate of approximately $5,100.

This isn’t a cosmetic improvement or something I simply want for the house. It is something our home needs, especially with winter approaching. I have looked at my options, and financing the replacement would mean adding another monthly debt payment to my budget for years.

Technically, I could sign financing paperwork and make this problem disappear today. But doing so would also mean undoing a significant portion of the financial progress I have fought so hard to make.

That is why I am asking for help.

I realize that I am fortunate in many ways. I am employed. My child and I have a home. Our basic needs are met, and I am grateful for those things. I am not looking for someone else to support us or take responsibility for expenses that are normally mine. Under ordinary circumstances, I do exactly that.

This is simply one expense that is too large for me to manage at once.

Assistance with replacing our heating system would allow me to provide a safe, warm home for my child without returning to the cycle of debt I have spent the last several years working to escape. More importantly, it would allow the progress I have made toward true financial independence to continue instead of being erased by one unavoidable home repair.

I have learned through this experience that rebuilding a life doesn’t happen all at once. It happens through hundreds of small decisions to keep moving forward. Receiving help with this expense would be an enormous one-time hand up that would allow me to keep doing exactly that.
