On Tuesday, May 21st the James Monroe High School lacrosse team loaded a bus and headed to Hanover High School for the big Regional Semi-final playoff lacrosse game. During the third quarter defensive midfielder, Gunnar Burns, was severely injured while defending the goal. He was immediately rushed to VCU where he underwent emergency surgery. The official diagnosis post-accident: an incomplete spinal injury.
Gunnar successfully underwent another major surgery on May 24th and remained in ICU for several weeks. His friends and teammates rallied around him day in and day out and his parents have never left his side.
On June 5th Gunnar was flown to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia for extensive rehabilitation, where he will reside as he continues his recovery journey. Despite facing a long road ahead, Gunnar remains determined and is making remarkable progress while maintaining a positive attitude. Gunnar is a fighter and an inspiration to us all.
This campaign aims to raise funds for Gunnar’s immediate and ongoing medical expenses and for future anticipated costs, specifically for modifications to the family’s home and vehicle to accommodate Gunnar’s needs. Contributions are greatly appreciated to support Gunnar and his family during this time.
Gunnar and his family are grateful for the overwhelming love, support, and prayers from their community and friends. The #Gunnarstrong community has been a daily source of inspiration for Gunnar where the outpouring of support is deeply felt.
