My name is Sharon, and I am in desperate need of financial support to keep my parent’s house that they purchased and lived in since 1971. Both of my parents are deceased. My mother just passed away not too long ago. While she was living, she qualified for the Homestead program which allowed her to keep her property taxes at a reduced rate. Even though she had the reduced tax rate, she still fell behind as she was on a fixed income and supported my brother who is bipolar and was not able to work. I, unfortunately, was not in a position to assist as I had my own bills to take care of.
Once the government learned that she had passed they removed the home from the homestead program and recalculated the property taxes. I was not in a position to pay the taxes and as a result, the property was sold at a tax sale. I have until January 17, 2025, to reclaim the property. I don’t have $31,000.00 and if I don’t pay it before the deadline, they will take the property. I recently moved back into the said property along with my brother, daughter and 4-year-old grandson. If the sale is finalized, we will have to move and will be homeless. My credit is not good, and I am at a loss of what to do. Any financial assistance would be so much appreciated. I do not want to lose the home which has been in my family for over 50 years. I did start saving as best I could but given that I have only 6 months it won’t be nearly enough.
