William Ndidi Coughlon

March 15, 2003 – August 15, 2021
On August 15, 2021 at 3:18AM, William Ndidi Coughlon, our beloved son and brother, lost his battle with Renal Medullary Carcinoma. William was an energetic 18-year-old man. He is a recent graduate of St. Mary’s Ryken High School. William was an athlete who enjoyed playing basketball and was on the varsity soccer team at SMR. He was also a scholar. Will was planning on attending Temple University to study for his Doctor’s of Physical Therapy. He was supposed to move in on the 16th of August. William was an intelligent, respectful, happy, caring, confident, competitive, loving, helpful, funny, and strong young man who was loved by his family, friends, doctors, nurses, and everyone who met him.
William is preceded by his grandfather, Dr. Godwin U. Obi and his uncle, Dr. Frank C. Obi. He leaves behind his father, Daniel Coughlon; his mother, Carmela Coughlon; his brother, Alexander Coughlon; his sister, Genevieve Coughlon; and his grandparents, James Coughlon, Marlene Coughlon, and Roseline Obi. He is also survived by his uncles, aunts, cousins, and the young woman he loved, Drew Pettis. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in William’s name to those who have helped us: Make A Wish Foundation, Children’s National Hospital, MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, The Ronald McDonald House, and feel free to donate to the cancer research foundation of your choice.

Update June 22, 2021:
CONGRATULATIONS to Will and the Class of 2021!!!! 🎓 👏
A huge accomplishment under the best of circumstances, a MONUMENTAL accomplishment despite the medical challenges! Determination, perseverance, prayers, family, friends, love…and WillPower! 🙌 👊

The Fight Continues
Will has been admitted into a trial for a therapy to address the problem with his liver. This new trial will require that he visit Houston every two weeks for six weeks until the Doctor can dial in the dosage of the new medications. After that, he will visit once a month until the trial ends. They are continuing to look at other treatment options while the trial is underway. The traditional immunotherapy for cancer has not proven effective with renal medullary carcinoma (RMC), but there is a new immunotherapy that should be accepted for use in the next 3-6 months. The fight isn’t over and we ask that you continue to pray for our Warrior and his family. 🙏

Update May 2, 2021

Good morning Warriors!!! ☀️ I am thrilled to report that the trip to MD Anderson in Houston, TX was successful and VERY promising! ALL THE TUMORS ARE SHRINKING!!!! 🙌 The doctors are very optimistic, but cautious, and want Will to continue chemo treatments for another 6 weeks to monitor the tumors until they stop shrinking. They encouraged the Coughlon family that any remnants visible at that point are likely scar tissue. This is fantastic news and we are all hopeful that the next trip in June will be the end of chemo. During the next visit they will also do an MRI to check on how Will’s liver is holding up through treatments. We continue to pray for healing and positive test results!! 🙏During all of this, Will maintained his school work and is going to graduate with his class in June! Woooowhooooo!!!!! 🥳👊Congratulations to the Knights of 2021!!! 👏👏

Update April 19, 2021

Good evening Warriors! The Coughlon’s are at a crucial stage of their battle and need ALL of us warriors to pray over the next week and a half. 🙏Pray for healing and miracle results that show the treatments have been successful! Pray for their safe travels, comfort, and strength through this next series of tests. Your support, prayers, and love make such a difference to the family and have provided such comfort through a very challenging time. God bless you all! 🙌

Update March 21, 2021

Greetings Warriors! 🙌 I am happy to say that no news is good news. It has been a while since I last updated you, but things are going well. The Coughlon family is staying strong and positive as they continue to press forward with work, school, sports, activities, treatments, and family life. Will is progressing through rounds of treatments with the help of his incredible family and medical team. By the grace of God, his kidney and liver functions are good and blood transfusions are helping to raise his platelet count. After his sixth treatment cycle ends in April, they will once again travel to Houston’s MD Anderson to check on his progress. Please continue to keep the Coughlon’s in your prayers and use this page to send notes, post photos, share prayers, and send virtual hugs. All your thoughts and prayers truly make a difference! 🙏❤️

Update February 5, 2021
GREAT news!!! William just returned from MD Anderson where he was tested for his body’s response to the chemotherapy. The tumors are shrinking to nearly HALF their original size!! Today he will begin his third round of chemotherapy. Please continue to keep Will and his family in your prayers, it is clearly working! Thank you Warriors for your steadfast support! 🙏❤️
Update January 20, 2021:
This week William started attending virtual classes with his school! Understandably there are significant challenges ahead but everyone (William, his family, St. Mary’s Ryken, and all of us Warriors) are committed to helping him overcome and persevere to graduate on time. The second cycle of chemo is in progress and prayers for strength and healing are welcomed. The Coughlon’s will be traveling to Houston at the completion of each cycle for testing at MD Anderson to determine and track his progress. As always, the entire family deeply appreciates the prayers, love, and support from everyone. All of your messages are true blessings!
Update January 7, 2021: The meeting with MD Anderson was very encouraging! William is doing well on the current treatment course. So the plan is to continue his treatment with Children’s National Hospital in Washington D.C. and have monthly visits to MD Anderson down in Houston. William has a great team of doctors helping him that are well coordinated on his care.
Dan and Carmela are working with Will’s school, St. Mary’s Ryken, to ensure he will still be able to graduate this year given the challenges that are encountered when undergoing chemotherapy.
To each and every one of you fellow “William’s Warriors”, the Coughlon family is so deeply appreciative of the thoughts, prayers, and continued support. Though they may not always be able to respond, they read and appreciate all of your messages.

Update January 5, 2021:  The family travelled to Houston yesterday for an initial consultation for entry into a Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC) clinical trial. William and his family are overwhelmed with gratitude for all the love, support, and prayers. Thank YOU – each and every one of you – so very much!
