My name is Renee, Colton’s mother, and we are fighting with insurance to cover his surgery and hotel stay in Memphis. Despite previous approval, insurance has been covering treatment as well as lodging and fuel reimbursement since 2023, but now they’re refusing to pay for surgery as well as lodging & fuel reimbursement despite it being medically necessary. They now refuse lodging due to Colton’s age, claiming he is no longer a premature baby. They refuse surgery saying we need to get a second opinion because they don’t feel it’s medically necessary even though 3 physicians say it is medically necessary. I share our journey, from misdiagnosis to finding the right doctors and our struggles with insurance coverage.
We have been on a journey to find the right treatment for him ever since.
Despite being misdiagnosed, we were eventually able to get a correct diagnosis and begin treatment.
My son was diagnosed with a capillary deep hemangioma at 4 months old. After being misdiagnosed by two hospitals, we were referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist. I contacted several within a 1.5 to 4-hour radius(Fayetteville, TN), and eventually, we were able to get an appointment at Le bonheur(1 Week vs other being booked out 1 mth or longer) in Memphis. After a series of treatments, including topical ointment, oral medication, and injections, we were told that surgery is necessary to treat the hemangioma. However, our insurance provider has refused to cover the surgery, claiming that it is not medically necessary. We have also been denied coverage for lodging since our son turned one. As a result, I have had to rely on fundraising and support from strangers to cover our expenses.
Let’s help this little champ get the surgery he needs! We’ve tried various treatments, and now it’s time for the next step. We urgently need help to fund Colton’s surgery, scheduled for September 12th, to treat his hemangioma, which causes vision impairment. It is also causing him to lose his balance, fall, run into things and have breathing difficulties.
Every little bit counts! #blessings #faith #healing
**Rescheduled to 9/5 due to Dr scheduling conflict**
